There is much more to Zanzibar than Stone Town.
Picture
Not far from it, the remains of the 1850 Baths built by the Sultan for his Persian wife. Not so much the outside,
Picture
...but the inside's decorated stucco walls,...
Picture
...motifs....
Picture
...and dome ceilings, with...
Picture
...equally decorated skylights, all a reminisent of places seen in Persia (Iran).
Picture
Of course there are lots of bays, and beaches, and ....
Picture
....bars catering to the domestic and international tourists.
Picture
Since English is widely spoken by Tanzanians, it seems to be the language of choice for these destinations.

Also along the beach are dhow building "dry docks", where the process of making the boats can be seen.
Picture
Hand crafted, with ...

...basic tools: the drill is operated by pulling a string on a rod with the right hand, and guiding and pressing the drill with the left, making a pilot hole for large spikes hammered in to hold the planks to the ribs.

Picture
At the north tip of the island this "aquarium" is actually a turtle rescue preserve.

Picture
Picture
Of course reproduction occurs, and each baby has its own tub until ....
Picture
...large enough not to be eaten by others, so can swim around with siblings.

Picture
Eventually getting large enough for the big pond.
Picture
The preserve attracts international students (these two are from St. Lawrence U., in upstate New York), who spend time caring for the turtles, doing things such as cleaning their shells. Once a year, in February, there is a "Release Party", where those deemed large enough and well enough to make it on their own, are sent out to sea.

Picture
Another Preserve is to protect a group of Corbus monkeys. So well protected, and visited by strangers, they are very tame, and ...
Picture
...seem to enjoy watching the tourists as much as the tourists them.
Picture
Picture
Yet another attraction are the Spice Farms. Zanzibar was once knows at the Spice Island, especially for cloves.

Picture
But that's not all. A small shop has samples of many kinds once a major part of the island economy.

Picture
Now, bringing out tourists, and dressing them up with items from the forest, are a major part of the island economy.
